General Chapter 2014 Was Blessed

We would like to offer a sincere thank you for everyone who was praying for us during our General Chapter. We truly experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit as we prayed, met, discussed and made decisions regarding our way of life.

Ever since the early Church gathered for the "Council of Jerusalem" (see Acts 15) the history of Christianity is filled with such moments of grace. Saint Francis and the early friars would often gather during the time of Pentecost, and so the tradition continues in our own day.

"How good and how pleasant it is,
when brothers dwell together as one!
Like fine oil on the head,
running down upon the beard,
Upon the beard of Aaron,
upon the collar of his robe.
Like the dew of Hermon coming down
upon the mountains of Zion.
There the LORD has decreed a blessing,
life for evermore!" Psalm 133

At the Piano: A Reflection for Father’s Day

And I loved how you would just listen to me play from the other room from where I couldn't see you—in your arm chair with the paper, glasses to the side, slippers if it were winter. I couldn't see you but I knew—even when I would mess up—I knew you didn't move and you didn't leave because I was listening. And I came to love, in the silence of my frustration, as the clashing chords dissipated in the darkness between us, the slow rough sound of the paper’s pages being folded over themselves, the loosening shake and the tightening slap as you stretched the metro page before you. I loved it because it meant you didn't go, and that’s why I didn't either. That is why I continued to play.

Later I would hear you around the house whistling my melodies, I think unbeknownst to you. That meant the world to me. I have to say, it really did.

General Chapter

Please pray for us!

All of the friars in final vows from around the world will be meeting for our General Chapter from June 8-18. Like the friars in the days of Saint Francis, we will begin on Pentecost - come Holy Spirit! We will be praying, discussing, discerning and electing leadership.

"How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity... like oil running down Aaron's beard..." (Psalm 133)
